Ebrahim Moosa, a Professor of Islamic Thought and Muslim Societies (AUC) at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana/USA), is the guest of the sixteenth program of our seminar series “A Common Horizon for Humanity and the Planet”, which will be broadcast live on the Cappadocia University YouTube channel on Thursday, December 1st at 19:00, Turkish time. Moosa’s interests span both classical and modern Islamic thought with a special focus on Islamic law, history, ethics and theology. He is the author of “What Is a Madrasa?” (University of North Carolina Press, 2015), “Ghazali and the Poetics of Imagination” (University of North Carolina Press, 2005) (winner of the American Academy of Religion’s Best First Book in the History of Religions). He is also the co-editor of the books: The African Renaissance and the Afro-Arab Spring (Georgetown University Press, 2015); Islam in the Modern World (Routledge, 2014), and “Muslim Family Law in Sub-Saharan Africa: Colonial Legacies and Post-Colonial Challenges” (Amsterdam University Press, 2010). His book “Ghazali and the Poetics of Imagination” was translated to Turkish under the name of “Gazzali ve İmgelem Poetikası”. Ebrahim Moosa, a Professor of Islamic Thought and Muslim Societies (AUC) in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana/USA), completed his BA at Kanpur University (India) in 1982, his MA in 1989 and his PhD in 1995 at University of Cape Town (S. Africa).
Moosa’s interests span both classical and modern Islamic thought with a special focus on Islamic law, history, ethics and theology. He co-directs Contending Modernities, the global research and education initiative examining the interaction among Catholic, Muslim, and other religious and secular forces in the world. He is a faculty fellow of the Keough School’s Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies.
He is the author of “What Is a Madrasa?” (University of North Carolina Press, 2015), “Ghazali and the Poetics of Imagination” (University of North Carolina Press, 2005) (winner of the American Academy of Religion’s Best First Book in the History of Religions). Professor at Cappadocia University
Prof. İskender Öksüz completed his undergraduate studies at Ege University in 1966, his MS in 1968 and PhD in 1969 at Yale University under the supervision of Prof. Oktay Sinanoğlu. In addition to various academic and administrative appointments in METU and Gazi University in Turkey and, University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia, he also served as a Member of the Turkish Atomic Energy Commission and Advisor to the Minister on Atomic Energy. Professor Öksüz has widely published on politics and sociology in addition to his main major Chemistry.
