Year 1: A Philosophical Recounting in Light of a Common Future

Leading interdisciplinary thinker and a prolific writer Susan Buck-Morss, a Professor at the City University of New York, is the guest of the fifth program of the seminar series “A Common Horizon for Humanity and the Planet”, which will be broadcasted live on the Cappadocia University YouTube channel on Thursday, January 20 at 19:00, Turkish time. Her research is oriented towards the study of culture, visual theory, and globalization. She is the author of many books, including “The Origin of Negative Dialectics” (1977); “The Dialectics of Seeing” (2001); “Dreamworld and Catastrophe: The Passing of Mass Utopia in East and West” (2002); “Thinking Past Terror: Islamism and Critical Theory on the Left” (2006); “Revolution Today” (2019); “Hegel, Haiti and Universal History” (2009) and “Year 1: A Philosophical Recounting” (2021). Her five books, including “Hegel, Haiti and Universal History” were translated to Turkish.

The conversation will be on the topic of YEAR 1: A Philosophical Recounting in Light of a Common Future”. The program will be moderated by Professor Banu Bargu.

Prof. Susan Buck-Morss

Professor at the City University of New York

Susan Buck-Morss, a Professor at the City University of New York, completed her BA in Intellectual History at Vassar College, MA in American History at Yale University and PhD in European Intellectual History at Georgetown University in 1975. She is an interdisciplinary thinker and a prolific writer of international reputation. Her research is oriented towards the study of cultural studies, visual theory, globalization. She is the author of many books, including “The Origin of Negative Dialectics” (1977); “The Dialectics of Seeing” (2001); “Dreamworld and Catastrophe: The Passing of Mass Utopia in East and West” (2002), “Thinking Past Terror: Islamism and Critical Theory on the Left” (2006), “Revolution Today” (2019), “Hegel, Haiti and Universal History” (2009) and “Year 1: A Philosophical Recounting” (2021). Her five books, including “Hegel, Haiti and Universal History” were translated to Turkish. Professor Buck-Morss has published in many academic journals and has received several international awards.

Prof. Banu Bargu

Professor at University of California

Professor Banu Bargu is a Professor in the Consciousness Department of University of California at Santa Cruz. She completed her undergraduate studies at Boğaziçi University in 1997 and her PhD at Cornell University in 2008. Professor Bargu’s research concerns theories of sovereignty and biopolitics, the role of the body in resistance practices, and traditions of materialist thought.
