Former Ambassador of the TRNC to Ankara

He was born in Nicosia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on August 5, 1945. He completed his primary and secondary education in Cyprus and pursued his higher education in Turkey. In the year he began university studies, on December 21, 1963, due to the Bloody Christmas massacre initiated by Greek Cypriots against the Turkish people as part of the Akritas Plan, he returned to Cyprus along with other Turkish Cypriot students to participate in the Turkish Cypriot struggle for survival. Between 1964 and 1966, he actively took part in the struggle as a fighter (Mücahit). After interrupting his university education and returning to Cyprus, upon the discharge of the students who had come back to Cyprus, he came to Ankara and resumed his university studies in 1967. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Science at Ankara University in 1971.

He started his career in May 1973 as a Budget Controller at the Ministry of Finance of the Turkish Cypriot administration. Due to the Sampson Coup carried out by the Greek Junta in Cyprus, he was called to the military reserve on July 15, 1974, and participated as a combatant in the Turkish Cypriot Peace Operation on July 20, 1974.

After the Peace Operation, in January 1975, he was appointed Assistant Planning Expert at the State Planning Organization of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Prime Ministry (then named Ministry of Coordination and Planning). Within the State Planning Organization of the TRNC Prime Ministry, he was successively promoted to Planning Expert in 1977, Senior Planning Expert in 1983, Head of Economic Planning Department in 1988, and Undersecretary in 1991.

He was an Italian government scholarship holder and pursued postgraduate education at the Institute of Economic Planning and Development (ISVE-Napoli) between 1980-1981, where he earned a diploma. He was also a US government scholarship holder, attending a graduate program at Boston University during 1986-1987. He earned a Master’s degree in Economics from Eastern Mediterranean University in 1995 and completed his PhD in the Department of Economics at Uludağ University, Turkey, in 2000.

He served as a Board Member of the Cyprus Turkish Foundations Administration, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees and Board of Directors at Lefke European University, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Eastern Mediterranean University, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Turkish Cooperative Central Bank.

He served as the Ambassador of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to Ankara for five years from August 1999 to August 2004. He retired in October 2004 and started working as an Assistant Professor at Başkent University, Turkey, the same month. He was a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of Başkent University and a member of the Board of Directors of the Başkent University Cyprus Turkish Historical Research Center.
